Ceramic serves to shield astronauts from extreme heat, but Junghans also uses it to protect its Atomic wristwatches against scratching and breakage. The watch case starts out as a blank made of zirconium oxide, which is then baked in a kiln at 1000-1400 C(1800-2500F) for 30-36 hours to give the ceramic material its final appearance and shape. This process also makes the ceramic extremely durable and harder even than stainless steel. It is also hypoallergenic and very lightweight.
